Excerpt from Rudiments of a Vocabulary of Egyptian Hieroglyphics
The Arabic language was spoken by every nation bordering upon Egypt. We learn from Manetho that the Arabs had extended them selves, by gradual intercourse and imperceptible migration, over a large part of the De... lta, whence they were expelled with the Jews, who were of a kindred race, in the time of Moses; and it is pro bable that at an equally early time this language had spread itself along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to Cyrene, and as far as Carthage, and that when Dido ¿ed to that city it was to join an established colony of men speaking her own language.
