Excerpt from Remarks on Several Parts of Italy, &C: In the Year 1701, 1702, 1703

The next day we again fet fail, and made the belt of our way until we were forced, by contrary winds, into St. Rama, a very pretty town in the Genoa/é dominions The front to the fea is not large but there are a great many houfes behind it, built up the fide of the mountain to avoid the winds and vaormrs that come from fea. We here {aw féverd perfons that in the midl't of December had no thing over their {boulders but their fhirts, without complaining of the cold. It i', cer tainly very lucky for the poorer fort to be born in a place that is free from the grated in convenience, to which thofe of our not them nations are fubjeét; and ind: with out this natural benefit of their climates, the extreme mifery and poverty that in molt of the Italian governments would he irifup portable. There are at St. Rim many plat. Tations of palm-tees, though they do not grow in other parts of Ira/y. We failed from hence directly for Gama; and had a fair wind that carried us into the middle of the gulph, which is very remarkable for tempeils and fcarcity of fifh. It is probable one may be the caufe of the other, whether it be that the fifhermen cannot employ their art with 9) much fudcefs in [0 troubled a fea, or that the fith do not care for inhabiting fuch {tormy waters.
