Excerpt from Periodic and Loose Sentences in Schiller's Historical Works: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, (Department of Germanic Languages and Literature)
A second reas... on for concerning ourselves about his historical works is, that they form a class by themselves. They belong to one period of his literary activity. They belong to a very important stage of his development, when his exuberant powers, seasoned by his first literary successes, were steadying down to the plainer classical usages. The study of history and philosophy contributed much to the development of those literary characteristics which have been the admiration of succeeding generations. His historical works fill in the gap between his early and his later dramas and show his art maturing. A study of his prose is necessary, if we would understand the source of that simplicity and Objectivity, which mark his best known works.
