Since, therefore, the author has published the volume simply for his own pleasure, and for the enjoyment of the few friends who will know how to appreciate it by reason of their attachment to the writer, and not b... ecause of any merit in the verses themselves, he begs to be allowed to say to any 'who may feel disposed to criticise, that their time and labor will be altogether wasted, inasmuch as the author, now that he has fully explained his reasons for their publication, is alike unconcerned whether his youthful effusions are either blamed or praised.
The title has been selected, not for the reason that it bears any real appropriateness to the contents of the volume, but because it is the name of the city where a large share of the writer's youth was passed, and where many of the verses were written, and because the name is, in itself, unique.
