Bibliotekernes beskrivelse
In spite of Islam's long history in Europe and the growing number of Muslims resident in Europe, little research exists on Muslim pilgrimage in Europe. The present anthology fills this void by introducing current research topics, methodological and theoretical approaches, and findings in an emerging research field examining deep-rooted as well as evolving religious Muslim practices in Europe. Placing the pilgrims' practices and experiences centre stage, established and emerging scholars from history, anthropology, religious studies, Islamic art history and sociology, examine historical and contemporary hajj and non-hajj pilgrimage to sites outside and within Europe, to discuss continuity, revitalization, and innovation of pilgrimage. Examining travelogues, ethnographic data, biographic information, material culture, and online surveys, the studies focus on European converts to Islam, Muslim migrants to Europe, as well as European-born Muslims, resident in Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Great Britain, and Norway. The case studies analyse the pilgrims' motivations, preparation, travel, stay, and return, discussing the multiple ways pilgrimage experiences can transform the individual and affect the home-community. Pilgrimage sites are explored with attention to how they are created, sanctioned, forgotten, revived, and managed. Linked to changing sectarian, political and economic circumstances, pilgrimage sites are shown to be dynamic places of intra-religious and inter-religious conflict as well as collaboration.
