He shared lessons with Dudley Moore in their music class at Dagenham County High school. After shaking hands on the last day of term in July 1955 Dudley went off to become an organ scholar at Oxford, and eventually a famous film star and all-round musicial, while Brian served his time int he Army, as a clarinettist in the band of the Coldstream Guards. "We met up on one or two occasions later, and I confessed, "Dudley, you 'made it' musically, but I didn't." Was this true? Read on for Dudley Moore's incredible reaction.
From the army to Cathedral, from music shop to classroom, folk music to orchestra, Brian realised he wanted a musical career. Growing up in the War and overcoming post-war difficulties, after service in the Army he became a music teacher, which opened doors to other opportunities. Playing clarinet in an orchestra, Music Director in Cambridge, organist in the village church, as a singer in Hereford Cathedral, and as Music Host for Saga Holidays, his experiences and anecdotes in these situations give a fascinating, often amusing, sometimes sad, insight into the life of an ordinary "Dagenham" boy.
