Excerpt from Monsieur Pinson
I take this Opportunity Of recording an experience which may interest teachers who attach importance to this part of their work. A class Of four-and twenty boys who, pari passu with the construing of their Reader (with a weekly revision of all tha... t had been gone through up to date), had learnt the vocabulary of their Word and Phrasebook (360 words and 180 phrases), had, on the average, 75 per cent Of those asked by the examiner perfectly correct on being tested at the end of term; and six months, later, eighteen Of these boys were unex pectedly again examined on the same Words and Phrases, which had not been revised in the mean time, and the result was an average of 64: per cent faultless answers. This seems to me to Show that a vocabulary acquired in this manner in connexion with the Reading Book, and applied in various forms Of oral practice and written exercises, becomes a lasting possession of the pupil's.
