Forlagets beskrivelse
Excerpt from Method and Procedure of Soil Analysis Used in the Division of Soil Chemistry and Physics

After the precipitation of the iron group by ammonia, it has been customary to remove manganese, nickel, copper, etc., by ammonium sulfide. This policy has been questioned. The precipitation by ammonium sulfide has the advantage that platinum, which may be in solution, is removed and will cause no further trouble. Manganese is also removed and will not contaminate the magnesium precipitate. Soils contain considerable manganese which will occasionally cause serious error if not removed. When manganese is not removed by ammonium sulfide, the magnesium precipitate will invariably con tain manganese for which correction must be made, requiring the added work of a determination of manganese in the magnesium precipitate.

Eva'porations should be made in platinum dishes, when possible, to avoid contamination due to solubility of glassware and porcelain. Ammoniacal solutions, especially, have a strong solvent action on glass, and if it is necessary to keep such solutions in glass for any great length of time it is better to acidify the solution. Caution must be observed against the employment of certain kinds of chemical glassware when zinc is to be determined or when zinc may in¿uence some other determination. As much as 2 mg. Of zno may be dis solved from certain kinds of laboratory glassware in an ordinary analysis.
