Excerpt from Memoirs of Rhode Island Officers Who Were Engaged in the Service of Their Country During the Great Rebellion of the South: Illustrated With Thirty-Four Portraits
As the batteries of light artillery were generally detached from their regiments, and not under the d... irect command of a colonel, it seems proper that the services of each should be mentioned, otherwise several that served in distant campaigns would be left without notice. Besides, the services they rendered were so important that they deserve a prominent place in every history of the war.
