Excerpt from Lessons in English: Higher Course
The study of Literature is continued in this course - more difficult questions being introduced; and the figures of speech are taught from the first lesson. The paraphrasing, epitomizing, or sketching of the Literary Selections, ... is an exercise so useful that it should never be omitted. The Supplementary Literary Selections, towards the end of the volume, are additional to those given at the beginning of every fifth lesson. It is expected that the pupils will be required to analyze and annotate one or more of these after finishing the study of each Selection given in the regular lessons. It is presumed that the Literary Selections generally, particularly the pieces in prose, are good models of composi tion. The leading English and American authors are represented in these excerpts.
