Excerpt from Home Decoration
Another feature quite important in the use of color is color gradation. The different parts of a room from their positions and thepurposes which they serve call for varying quantities of light and dark. The ¿oor, a recognized weight' supporter sho... uld be the darkest spot in the room, the base-board occupies the next place and should receive a lighter tone, the wall covering may be even lighter than the wood work, while the ceiling calls for the lightest color. Any arrange ment of color contrary to this results in a topsy-turvy effect. The ceiling when done in dark tones seems to be falling on us.
