Excerpt from Holroyd's Collection of Yorkshire Ballads: With Some Remarks on Ballad Lore
Mr. Holroyd was a genuine antiquary. But not of the type that sees no merit in a book beyond its antiquity or scarcity. He was too liberal-minded to believe that a hook is valueless becau... se it might not happen to be one of a first edition, or that its real worth is depreciated by its abundance or its free and unrestricted circulation among the book - reading public. For the good work that he has done in popularising, by means of cheap reprints. Works of a scarce and costly character, he is de~erving of public gratitude.
