Excerpt from Graystone: A Novel
It was in the little hamlet of villers-la-ville, situated near Brussels, - where her father was studying the ruins of the old cathedral in which Peter the Hermit preached the Crusade, - that Ruth was born. The inn was a one-storied affair of ro... ughly-hewn granite which had previously been occupied as a mill. The remains of the old water-wheel were still there, and behind the building was a garden enclosed within high stone walls. The spot was full of artistic possibilities. Here the dark-featured, dreamy artist lingered and sketched, while his practical wife gave to their only child the devoted care which laid the foundation of her future lusty, vigorous health.
