Excerpt from Eulogy on the Life and Character of Rev. Zachariah Greene, a Patriot of the Revolution, and Late Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Setauket, N. Y: Delivered at the Request of the Citizens of Hempstead, February 10th, 1859
Carefully and tenderly I sh... all now draw the veil from before the memory of the departed. Carefully and tenderly I shall approach that character which I know was human, finite, imperfect, like unto the most miserable of us all, - but, for the grace of God! We come not to sit in arrogant judgment upon him, with balance and weight and trenchant sword. We come not to weigh his character, - so many ounces of guilt against so many pounds of grace; for that is the single prerogative of Deity. But we are here, my friends, to review that character in its outward personality; to paint it as it was seen, and known, and admired and respected and reverenced among men; as it was felt in its in¿uence, honored in its excellence, and blest in its works and in its ways. To do this in a brotherly, a neighborly, and a Christianly spirit, is the duty to whose discharge I shall now address myself.
