ON the 8th of March, 17 02, the Princess Anne of Denmark was proclaimed Queen, and began her eventful reign.
The warlike preparations detailed in the Introduction to Vol. IV. (pp. ... XX. - xxi.) were continued with increased vigour. On the 9th March, 17 02, Queen Anne appointed the Earl of Marlborough to be General and Commander in-chief of the Forces to be employed in Holland in conjunction with the tr00ps of Her Majesty's Allies and the following day Anne signed a Royal Warrant at St. J ames's Palace, authorising the attorney-general to draw up a Patent constituting Marlborough Captain General of all the land forces in England, Wales, and town of berwick-upon-tweed, or which are or shall be employed abroad in conjunction with the troops of Her Majesty's Allies.
