Forlagets beskrivelse
Excerpt from Electricity and the Electric Telegraph, Vol. 1 of 2

The object which has been aimed at in the preparation of the present work has been to furnish a treatise on the subject of Electricity and the Telegraph, which should present a com prehensive and accurate summary of the present advanced state of the science and art, both in this country and abroad, and at the same time serve a useful purpose as a man ual for the information and guidance of those engaged in the different branches of the telegraphic service. N o pains have been spared to render the work complete, as well as historically and descriptively accurate. With this view every available means of information has been resorted to, and all the existing literature relating to the subject has been carefully examined. Especial attention has been paid to the voluminous contributions of Germany, a nation whose electricians unquestionably occupy the foremost rank among discoverers and inventors, but whose labors, although lying at the foundation of many of the most brilliant achievements of modern telegraphy, have heretofore remained, for the most part, unknown to the English reader. The discoveries, inventions and practical improvements of the past few years, especially those relating to the duplex and quadruplex methods of transmission, and to the improved type printing apparatus, which in America have almost revolutionized the telegraphic service, are now described and illustrated for the first time with a completeness commensurate with the great importance of the subject.
