Excerpt from Due Commedie Moderne: O Bere O Affogare, And, Lumie Di Sicilia
The scope of the present work is twofold: first, to introduce to the student of Italian a number of words and phrases which occur most frequently in the living language of Italy; second, to render the... ir acquisition more easy by means of a fair amount of delightful reading. The editor has attached the greatest impor tance to the variety of colloquial expressions, which accounts for the preference of these two short plays to any one of the dramatic masterpieces of modern Italy. Special care has been taken to make the vocab ulary and notes complete and to interpret clearly the numerous gestures and interjections which frequently play a significant and essential part in the spoken lan guage of the Italians. In order to preserve, wherever possible, the force and vividness of the original, col loquial rather than bookish English phrases have been employed in rendering the Italian idiom.
Frequent references have been made to Professor Grandgent's Italian Grammar, and in some cases the most important rules have been quoted in full.
