Excerpt from Deutsche Sagen: Being a Course of German Reading With Vocabulary
A practical device which often succeeds in solving this problem is to avail oneself of the early simplicity of national myths, folk-stories, legends, which, though eminently simple, do not seem to l... ack dignity or meaning to growing children, while they can be stated by the teacher in such systematic forms as to help to the mastery of the difficulties of the language. Such a course is so particularly easy in German that it is rather wonderful so little has been done with the beautiful and historically significant mass of German legends in our German school work. The legends collected in this book are, even in their simplified and abridged form, a desirable acquisition for any student of literature. They are even when not produced en tirely by the German spirit, historically rooted in the enchanted past of the German race, and are still fresh in the imaginations of contemporary Germany.
