Excerpt from Der Fluch Der Scho¨nheit: Novelle
The scene of the story is laid in the region of the river Lahn in what is now the Prussian province of Hesse Nassau.
The time is that of the Thirty Years' War, the darkest and most distressing period of German history. T... he war itself, though we are not introduced directly to any of its great events or leading actors, forms all along, with its hid eoua barbarity and lawlessness, the sombre background of the picture. This being so, it seems proper to devote a few words in this place to the war as a whole, in order that the small fragment of it and the many allusions to it which our story presents may be the better understood.
