Forlagets beskrivelse
Excerpt from Collected Poems, 1800-1822: Facsimile Reproductions, With an Introduction

Bloomfield's first intention was that the poem be nothing more than a present for his mother. A memento Of the rural life he had known, it contained much that would be familiar to her.' When it occurred to him that many sillier things were sometimes printed, he took his manuscript (full Of regional errors in spelling and gram mar) to such bookmen as William Lane and to W. Bent, publisher of the Universal Magazine. His efforts to have a copy Of the poem printed for his mother were rescued from failure by Capel Lofft, who found him a publisher and revised the orthography. The publication Of his poem did not produce in Bloomfield the ingenuousness that might have appeared in a less humble man, and a troublesome but unaffected shyness caused him both to hate and to love his sudden notoriety.

The great and unexpected popularity Of The Farmer's Boy brought Bloomfield to the notice Of sundry public figures including the Duke Of Grafton, lord Of the manor in which the poet had lived, who granted him a small annuity. The time Bloomfield had for the shoemaking still vital to the support of his family was usurped by new friends, well-wishers, and the curious. His financial situation was such that he never amassed any fortune; when he did have some gain from his publications, his generosity led him to provide for various Of his relatives and to spend what remained on small conveniences for his immediate family. Bloomfield's own constitutional infirmity, the generally poor health Of his family, and the expenses Of treating a lame son helped keep him from all but modest comforts.
