Excerpt from Classification, Vol. 1: Class B, B-Bj, Philosophy
It seemed that in this class a desired degree of consistency or uni formity of treatment was not attainable in the distribution of the works of particular philosophers by subject, owing to lack of issues of such w... orks in separate form, the only existing or available editions in many cases forming part of collections, collected works, or combi nations of two or more special works. It was thought best, therefore, to keep together the resources of the library on a given writer, pro viding for the representation of special works under the subject or subjects concerned by filing reference entries in the shelf list under Logic, Metaphysics, Psychology, Ethics, and more specific subjects, as the case might be. Although duplicating to a certain extent the arrangement of the alphabetical catalogue, this appeared to be the only method by which great irregularity of treatment could be avoided.
It may also be noted that the schedules contain a number of names of writers of minor importance who happen to be represented in the collection. These were included chiefly for the purpose of illustrating the method of treatment of such classes of material.
