Excerpt from Appendix to the Dictionary of the Hausa Language (Published 1876): Hausa-English Part, With Additions of Hausa Literature

He is, however, much cheered by the fact that the study of the Hausa language is now not only encouraged, but is about to be made compulsory among the officers commanding the Hausa Corps at the Gold Coast and at Lagos.
