Early in the following year, about the month pf May, he deputed Lalla' Saddanund, who was his buxey and the confidential manager of his af' fairs, on a private commilfion to me, to folicit my forgivenefs for his pai... l conduft, and to give me allurances, confirmed by oath, of his future fubmi¿ion to the orders of my government, and compliance with my advice. I accepted his ex Cufes, and promifed him an oblivion of all that had palled exceptionable in his conduct, and my future proteétion and every good office in my power, fo long as be adhered to his profelli requiring only as the pledge of their fincerity, that: he would immediately notify his ready and un referved coulent to the demand which would be made upon him, this being the period for it, of the fubftdy for the current year, and that he would ufe no delay in difcharging it. I at the fame time explained to Saddanund the nature of the demand, its conformity to the culloms of all States in times of extraordinary emergency, and allured him that, though he mult expeét a repe~ tition of if every year fo long as the war lalled.
