"A Grain of Wheat" is a novel by Ngugi Wa Thiong'o with an introduction by Abdulrazak Gurnah. 

In “A Grain of Wheat” the year is 1963. The place is Kenya. Uhuru - Independence Day - is to come. The day where the colonized and colonizers reflect on their achievements and losses. 

In Thabai, the rebel leader, Kihika, was betrayed to the whiteman. Gikonoyo was imprisoned and his marriage was destroyed. The brave survivor, Mugo, harbours a terrible secret. 

“A Grain of Wheat” is an explosion of love, friendship, war and betrayal. The implied get their love and friendships challenged and they are forced to compromise. 

Ngugi Wa Thiong'o is the author of ”Weep Not Child” (1964), “The River Between” (1965) and “Petals of Blood” (1977)Ngugi Wa Thiong'o was chair of the Department of Literature at the University of Nairobi from 1972 to 1977Ngugi Wa Thiong'o became a professor of comparative literature and performance studies at New York University in 1992​Abdulrazak Gurnah is the author of “By the Sea” (2001)
