Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Coal Tar Colours
The writer considered that a work of the nature of a dictionary giving brief descriptions of each coal tar colour would fill the want indicated, hence the appearance of this volume. No systematic account of the process of manu... facture, or chemical relationships of the colours, has been attempted, but, as far as it has been possible to obtain the information, the chemical composition, formula, method of making, date of introduction, literature relating to it, and its discoverer have been given, while the properties and uses of the colours have had special attention paid to them.
Besides the descriptions of the coal tar colours themselves, brief accounts of other bodies which are of interest in connection with the subject have been given, and a few special articles added. Every care has been taken to bring the book up to date and to make the descriptions of the colours as accurate as possible, but he is conscious that there must be a few omissions for which, perhaps, readers will pardon him.
His thanks are due to most of the large firms of colour makers for much valuable information regarding their colours which has been embodied in the book.
